Learn Chinese - Shots may help you lose that pot belly

WORLD / Health

Shots may help you lose that pot belly

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-02 10:17

Washington - Researchers have figured out how to remove fat from one part
of the body and make it grow in another part -- at least in mice -- and
say their findings could benefit health as well as beauty.

Their findings also shed light on how and why stressed-out people so
often gain weight.

"We don't think this is something that would be used for gross obesity,
but for reshaping the body for use with pockets of fat ... that would be
all very good," said Dr. Zofia Zukowska of Georgetown University Medical
Center in Washington, who led the study.

Their findings are based on a naturally produced chemical messenger or
neurotransmitter called neuropeptide Y, or NPY -- long linked with
appetite, weight gain and obesity.

Zukowska said her findings in mice suggest that NPY helps make some body
fat more dangerous than other kinds. Controlling it could help slow some
of the more dangerous side effects of obesity such as heart disease and
diabetes, her team reported in the journal Nature Medicine.

Manipulating NPY offers a new tool for plastic surgeons. "You could take
the fat from your buttocks and put it in your breasts and cheeks," she
said.

NPY attaches to a receptor, a molecular doorway, in fat cells that is
called neuropeptide Y2 receptor, or Y2R. It activates fat cells and some
of cells in the blood vessels found in fat tissue.

Oppressive Commute

For the research, Zukowska's team first tried to stress mice in a way
that would duplicate human life.

They made them stand in cold puddles -- akin to riding a bus with wet
feet in the winter. They also put the mice with aggressive mice that
might act similarly to an angry human boss.

Half the stressed mice got a normal mouse diet and half got a high-fat,
high-sugar diet. "What I like to call the American diet," Zukowska said.

The stressed mice given a normal diet lost weight. Those on the
"American" diet gained weight, more weight than would be expected given
how much they ate. And their bodies were producing extra NPY.

Zukowska believes that NPY helps the body lay down fat, rich in blood
vessels. "It is the bad kind of obesity because it leads to diabetes,
hypertension, cardiovascular disease and strokes -- what we call
metabolic syndrome," she said.

When the researchers injected a drug that blocks Y2R -- the doorway NPY
uses to get into cells -- the mice lost 40 percent of their belly fat.
Not only that, but signs of diabetes and other ill effects disappeared.

"It had a profound effect on overall metabolism," Zukowska said.

Her team also made NPY into a slow-release pellet. When they placed this
pellet under the skin of thin rhesus monkeys, they grew pockets of fat
around the pellets. Such treatments may help replace the fat lost in
people's faces as they age.

They used a drug made by privately owned Boehringer Ingelheim to do this,
and have a license for its use in this way, but Zukowska said her team
may look for other drugs that have the same effect. It has not yet been
tested in humans.

Zukowska noted that some clinics claim to already offer such treatments,
but said they use bile acids that kill tissue and may cause infection.
"There isn't anything on the market right now that could be used to melt
the fat that is scientifically proven," she said.

Firstborn sons have higher IQs: Study

(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-06-23 06:58

WASHINGTON: Firstborn sons have higher IQs than their younger brothers,
and their social status within the family might explain why, researchers
said on Thursday.

A study that used the military draft records of more than 240,000
Norwegian men found that firstborns had an edge of 2.3 IQ points on their
next oldest brothers, who in turn beat brothers born third by an average
of 1.1 points.

Men who had been raised as the eldest, whether they were born first,
second, or third, had IQs to match their firstborn peers.

The same was true for those raised or born second, Petter Kristensen and
colleagues at the University of Oslo reported in the journals Science and
Intelligence.

"This study provides evidence that the relation between birth order and
IQ score is dependent on the social rank in the family and not birth
order as such," Kristensen's team wrote in Science.

Their studies confirmed what many scientists had suspected for more than
a century - that firstborns have an edge.

But attempts to prove the effect have been disputed, in part because the
circumstances of each family are different.

To compensate for this, Kristensen's team studied brothers raised in the
same families.

And some scientists argue that birth order IQ differences arise in the
womb, while others point to family interactions.

To distill potential biological effects from social effects, Kristensen's
team dug up the young men's family birth records and found families whose
firstborn or first and second-born children had died before the age of
one year.

That was when they discovered that it was not birth order so much as
growing up as the eldest of the children in a family that made the
difference.

N.Korea envoy eyes talks soon

(Reuters)

North Korean funds that had been frozen in a Macau bank account for
nearly two years will soon reach Pyongyang and that should spur
inspections of the North's nuclear sites, U.S. envoy Christopher Hill
said.

US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill speaks to the media in
the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator June 16, 2007. North Korean funds
that had been frozen in a Macau bank account for nearly two years will
soon reach Pyongyang and that should spur inspections of the North's
nuclear sites, Hill said.[Reuters]

Speaking late on Friday, Hill told reporters in the Mongolian capital of
Ulan Bator that some $20 million of North Korean funds that had held up a
disarmament deal struck in February is on its way to North Korea by way
of the Russian banking system.

The funds would "be in the North Korean account very soon," said Hill,
who had traveled to Mongolia to attend a conference.

"I would expect (North Korea) to undertake their obligations as agreed in
the February meeting," he added.

Hill said that as soon as North Korea receives the funds, Pyongyang could
allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as
stipulated in a February 13 agreement following six-party talks involving
the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency on Saturday quoted diplomatic sources as
saying the BDA funds had reached the Russian central bank but had yet to
be sent along to the Russian bank in which Pyongyang has an account.

"The transfer is expected to be completed by early or mid-next week,
considering the due process," said Yonhap, quoting a source familiar with
the situation.

Kyodo news agency later quoted Hill as saying technical problems have
occurred regarding the transfer.

"I've heard that some technical problems have occurred within Russia,"
Kyodo quoted Hill. No further details were given.

All parties had also agreed to an April 14 deadline to close North
Korea's reactor, which was missed when Pyongyang insisted it first
receive the money that had been sitting in a Banco Delta Asia (BDA)
account in Macau.

Hill, who denied reports he may meet North Korean officials during his
trip to Mongolia, also expressed hope a fresh round of six-party talks
could get under way soon.

Talks would probably take place "very soon" after the funds had reached
North Korea, said Hill, who will be visiting Beijing Seoul and Tokyo next
week to discuss reconvening the six-party meeting.

Far from announcing plans to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, North
Korea warned on Friday it would "bolster its deterrent for self-defense,"
and lashed the United States for conducting an arms race.

North Korea made no mention of the BDA funds. Instead, its official KCNA
news agency railed against a U.S. plan for a chain of missile defense
systems around the world and its "hard-line hostile policy" towards
Pyongyang.

"The U.S. ever-more undisguised row of finding fault with the DPRK (North
Korea) and the arms race escalating in the areas around Korea due to the
U.S. moves will only force the DPRK to bolster its deterrent for
self-defense," it said.

Meanwhile, Chun Yung-woo, South Korea's chief envoy to six-country talks
on ending the North's nuclear program, was quoted the Yonhap news agency
as saying the BDA dispute was just the first obstacle to implementing the
February 13 deal.

Chinese Online Class - WHO warns against water-pipe smoking

WORLD / Health

WHO warns against water-pipe smoking

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-30 11:41

GENEVA - Water-pipe smoking may pose the same health risks as cigarettes,
the World Health Organization said Tuesday, adding that more scientific
research was needed into the link between hookah use and a number of
fatal illnesses.

A model poses with a 'hookah', a traditional smoking pipe as she walks
the ramp displaying the creations by the NIFT graduating student's
fashion show in Calcutta, India, Saturday, May 26, 2007. [AP]

"Using a water pipe to smoke tobacco is not a safe alternative to
cigarette smoking," the UN health agency said in a seven-page document on
the practice. "Contrary to ancient lore and popular belief, the smoke
that emerges from a water pipe contains numerous toxicants known to cause
lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases."

The WHO "advisory note" warned that using water pipes to consume the
tobacco, which is commonly a mixed with molasses and fruit flavors,
usually exposes a person to more smoke over a longer period of time than
do cigarettes. Preliminary research indicates that hookah smoking poses
many of the same dangers as cigarettes and may involve "some unique
health risks," the agency said.

A hookah is a bowl connected to a vase of water with a long tube and
mouthpiece. The tobacco sits inside the bowl with a layer of foil and a
hot coal on top. The tobacco is never lit, instead heated by the
charcoal, which smokers say produces a vapor different from smoke.

The hookah, used for centuries in North Africa, the Middle East and
Central and South Asia, has become increasingly popular in the United
States, Europe and Brazil, particularly among college students and young
adults.

WHO says the trend is partly due to "unfounded assumptions" of its
safety, and misleading commercial marketing.

The agency said a person can inhale more than 100 times more smoke in a
hookah session than in a single cigarette. By delivering nicotine, the
water pipe can cause addiction.

"None of the accessories have been demonstrated to reduce smokers'
exposure to toxins or risk of tobacco-related disease and death," WHO
said.

While further research is required, the health body said those exposed to
secondhand hookah smoke appeared to be at risk of the same diseases as
those exposed to cigarettes. WHO warned that hookah smoke could also
increase the risk of adverse effects during pregnancy.

Adelman agrees on deal with Rockets

By JONATHAN FEIGEN (Houston Chronicle)
Updated: 2007-05-22 14:13

Rick Adelman, the only candidate the Rockets pursued, agreed to terms
Monday on a contract to become the team's next coach, a person with
knowledge of the Rockets' decision-making said.

Adelman will fly to Houston today and be introduced Wednesday.

"The Rockets organization will get an outstanding coach," said Hall of
Fame guard Clyde Drexler, whom Adelman coached in six of Drexler's
11-plus seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. "I think he's the guy to
get them over the top."

After a series of meetings with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander and
general manager Daryl Morey on May 11 and May 12 less than a week
after the team's first-round playoff loss to the Utah Jazz Adelman
became the Rockets' choice to succeed Jeff Van Gundy, who on Friday was
fired after four seasons as coach.

"Rick is a really good coach and a better guy," Van Gundy said. "I think
he'll really do well."

Morey, Alexander and Adelman were not available for comment.

Adelman, 60, is 752-481 in 16 seasons as an NBA coach. He has a 70-68
postseason record. He led Portland to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992 and
advanced to the Western Conference finals in 1991 with the Trail Blazers
and 2002 with the Sacramento Kings.

Adelman's .610 winning percentage is the highest among coaches without an
NBA championship. Jerry Sloan (.600) and George Karl (.588) are next on
the list.

Selected by the Rockets in the seventh round of the 1968 draft, Adelman
went to the Trail Blazers in the 1970 expansion draft before the Rockets
moved from San Diego to Houston.

Adelman will join Rudy Tomjanovich as the only former Rockets players to
become the franchise's coach. Of the five teams for which Adelman played,
the Rockets will be the third to hire him as coach, joining the Trail
Blazers and Kings. He also played for the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans
Jazz during a seven-year career.

With Portland and his first Sacramento teams, Adelman had faced-paced,
high scoring clubs. His later squads, while still among the NBA's top
scoring teams, were more half-court oriented and used a lot of cuts and
screens in a variation of the Princeton offense.

Adelman's first seven Sacramento teams were among the top three scoring
teams in the NBA, and his first three Kings clubs led the league in
scoring. His 2001-02 team, which advanced to Game 7 of the Western
Conference finals before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers, won 61 games
by an average of 7.6 points.

Adelman was fired after the 2005-06 season in which the Kings went 44-38
before losing to the San Antonio Spurs in six games in the first round of
the playoffs.

His best season as a coach might have been with the 1990-91 Blazers.
Portland went 63-19 before losing to the Lakers in the Western Conference
finals.

OxyContin maker, execs guilty of deceit

ROANOKE, Va. - The maker of the powerful painkiller OxyContin and three
of its current and former executives pleaded guilty Thursday to
misleading the public about the drug's risk of addiction, a federal
prosecutor and the company said.

Purdue Pharmaceuticals in Stamford, Conn. is shown Tuesday, May 8, 2007.
The drug maker has agreed to pay 19.5 million in a settlement with 26
states and the District of Columbia to settle complaints about the
promotion of the drug OxyContin.  [AP]

Purdue Pharma L.P., its president, top lawyer and former chief medical
officer will pay $634.5 million in fines for claiming the drug was less
addictive and less subject to abuse than other pain medications, US
Attorney John Brownlee said.

The plea agreement settled a national case and came two days after the
Stamford, Conn.-based company agreed to pay $19.5 million to 26 states
and the District of Columbia to settle complaints that it encouraged
physicians to overprescribe OxyContin.

"With its OxyContin, Purdue unleashed a highly abusable, addictive, and
potentially dangerous drug on an unsuspecting and unknowing public,"
Brownlee said. "For these misrepresentations and crimes, Purdue and its
executives have been brought to justice."

Purdue spokesman James Heins objected to any suggestion of ties between
the plea agreement and the abuse of OxyContin.

"We promoted the medicine only to health-care professionals, not to
consumers," he said in a statement.

Privately held Purdue learned from focus groups with physicians in 1995
that doctors were worried about the abuse potential of OxyContin. The
company then gave false information to its sales representatives that the
drug had less potential for addiction and abuse than other painkillers,
the US attorney said.

Ken Jost of the Justice Department's Office of Consumer Litigation said
this case should put pharmaceutical companies on notice that they won't
be able to get away with breaking the law to make a profit.

"The things that they plot in their boardrooms, the things that they do
behind closed doors will not stay behind closed doors," Jost said. "We
have the people, we have the resources. We'll take the time and we'll
take the effort to find out what they did and how they did it."

Purdue Pharma said it accepted responsibility for its employees' actions.

"During the past six years, we have implemented changes to our internal
training, compliance and monitoring systems that seek to assure that
similar events do not occur again," the company said in a news release.

OxyContin, a trade name for oxycodone, is a time-release painkiller that
can be highly addictive. Designed to be swallowed whole and digested over
12 hours, the pills can produce a heroin-like high if crushed and then
swallowed, snorted or injected.

From 1996 to 2001, the number of oxycodone-related deaths nationwide
increased fivefold while the annual number of OxyContin prescriptions
increased nearly 20-fold, according to a report by the US Drug
Enforcement Administration. In 2002, the DEA said the drug caused 146
deaths and contributed to another 318.

The US attorney said the guilty pleas were entered Thursday morning in US
District Court in Abingdon, about 135 miles southwest of Roanoke. In an
unusual move, Brownlee said, company chief executive officer Michael
Friedman, general counsel Howard Udell and former chief medical officer
Paul Goldenheim each pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of misbranding
the drug. Of the total fine, $34.5 million was levied on those three.
