A wife of an African economic leader was in the Shanghai City History
Museum on May 16.

Chinanews, Shanghai, May 17 C Recently, Shanghainese can see many
African women appearing in colorful dress at the Shanghai International
Convention Center. They are the wives of African economic leaders who
come to Shanghai to attend the African Development Bank Annual Forum.
On May 16, after attending the ADB forum, the African ladies did the city
of Shanghai. At one time, they were in the Shanghai City History Museum,
seeing the historical development of Shanghai. Later, they found
themselves atop the Oriental Pearl TV Tower taking a birds eye view of
the city. In a few minutes, they were brought down by elevators and
walked through the old lanes in Shanghai downtown area. Listening to the
tour guide telling the historical development of Shanghai, the African
ladies exclaimed, Shanghai is changing so fast!
At the Shanghai City History Museum, a large sedan chair caught their
attention. It was nearly two meters high and was painted in red and
yellow strips. The tour guide told the visitors that the sedan chair was
used for wedding ceremony during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing
(1644-1911) dynasties. It took ten years to finish. Since there was no
door made for the sedan chair, the chair would have to be dismantled into
several parts before the bride sat in and after that, they would be
fitted together once more.
Since it was so inconvenient for the bride to walk in and out of the
sedan chair, the bride usually would refrain from drinking water before
walking in, the tour guide said.
Hearing this, everybody laughed.
On Thursday, the African ladies will visit Zhujiajiao, a famous water
town near Shanghai. The tour might remind the visitors of the Venice in
Italy.
