We are living in an age when efficiency means a great deal for both
social progress and individual convenience. It is particularly so for
such a populous nation as China.

From this perspective, the sixth increase in speed thanks to faster
trains, which officially starts April 18, is of great significance. The
high-speed trains travel 200 to 250 kilometers per hour.

Just as important is the increase in seats from 2.42 million to 2.76
million a day. This means trains will be able to transport 300,000 more
passengers across the country daily.

Travel time between major cities, such as Beijing to Shanghai, Beijing to
Shenyang, and Shanghai to Guangzhou, has been cut by some two hours or
more.

It is not realistic for a country of 1.3 billion to rely solely on the
expansion of airlines to relieve the heavy pressure on transport although
the air industry has developed considerably in recent years. We must have
a comprehensive transport network including airlines, railway, highway
and waterway transport to realize the most efficient flow of passengers
and cargo.
