Visa: Introduction to Chinese visas

There are four types of Chinese visas you are likely to come across. A couple of other types do
exist, but you are unlikely to need to know about them unless you are here long term or work on a
boat.

Contents

* X or student visa
* Z or working visa
* F or business visa
* L or tourist visa
* Visa free Entry
* APEC Cards
* Green Card
* Notes
  o Length of stay restrictions.

[top]X or student visa

Used by long-term students (usually more than one semester). Obtained from your local Chinese
embassy or consulate, you will need to provide proof of enrollment at a Chinese university.
Private schools are not usually able to assist you obtain an X visa. Once you have your X visa you
have three months to enter China. Once you enter the country you have thirty days to complete the
residence permit application process which will allow you to leave and enter the country as you
please as long as it is valid.

Under this Visa, the student is not supposed to work. However if the student is a native speaker
there is ample opportunity to teach English and get paid under the table. Many students do this,
and the authorities rarely check up on the students unless they have a reason. However, realize
that working under this visa is illegal[1].

[top]Z or working visa

Obtained from your local Chinese embassy or consulate, you will need to provide an invitation
letter from an approved Chinese employer. Many employers are reluctant to provide this and may ask
you to enter on a tourist or business visa. Once you have your Z visa you have three months to
enter China. Once you enter the country you have thirty daysto complete the residence permit
application process which will allow you to leave and enter the country as you please as long as
it is valid.

[top]F or business visa

Although commonly called a 'business' visa, the F actually stands for 访问 or visit. The F visa
is appropriate for short-term students (one semester or less) (that need to be confirmed as of
01-01-2008!!!!), those visiting for business purposes, visiting scholars, short-term internships
(not exceeding 6 months), etc. It is also commonly used by those working in China who cannot
obtain a Z visa. This is not legal, but often done.

To get an F visa from an overseas embassy or consulate you will need a letter of invitation from a
school or business in China. However, in Hong Kong agencies can arrange, at a cost, F visas of up
to three month duration with no documentation required. For more info, read about Hong Kong F
visas.

For many young westerners this is the visa of Choice. Most Europeans can get a 1 year visas, US
and other countries can be restricted to a 6 month visa. In some of the wealthier cities of
Beijing or Shanghai you may work one month (usually teaching English) and live of the earning for
another 5 months until you need to renew you visa or work again.

If you leave your Z work visa job the company can get the police station to revoke your visa.
However this entails some paperwork and is rarely done. For this reason some foreign workers
prefer the F visa. In addition, companies and schools need authority certification to issue the Z-
visa invitation letters. The criteria for F visa is less, and some schools will ask you to get the
F -visa.

Note: since 01-01-2008 the requirements for F Visa are stiffer. Hong Kong travel agent now give
only up the 3 month with no proof. For longer you need an invitation letter and you will have to
apply through an official channel.

[top]L or tourist visa

No supporting documentation required, but when applying don't mention on the form that you are a
journalist planning to research the plight of ethnic minorities in sensitive border regions.
Duration can range from 30 days to 120 days, and can usually be extended up to two times within
China.

[top]Visa free Entry

Currently, following nationals can enter China without visa for up to 15 days: Brunei, Japan,
Singapore
Source: http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/xwrmq/

[top]APEC Cards

If you are an APEC region resident you may can apply for an APEC card with a China visa waiver. An
APEC card will give you 3 years visa free entry.
http://www.apec.org/content/apec/bus...s_travel0.html

[top]Green Card

If you have started a large company in China or married a Chinese National, lived in China for 5
years you can apply and get a Chinese Permanent Resident Card. This will allow you to come and
leave the PRC without a visa. You will present the Green Card to Immigration on arrival, you may
need to present your passport as well.

[top]Notes

[top]Length of stay restrictions.

Be aware that F and L visas may have length of stay restrictions - ie, you may have a 6-month F
visa with a 60 day stay restriction, meaning you have to leave the country every two months.
Leaving the country can be as simple as crossing the border into Hong Kong and coming right back,
but even this can be expensive and time-consuming if you live in Urumuqi.

[1] Some Nanjing students made this mistake when they took part in a television advertisement for
a School that didn't have the authority to employ westerners. The School was shut down and
students were checked on everyday in the campus and were almost deported.

Why look for it when you can make it - that's just one of the pinyin converters available, I'm
sure there are others.
Paste it in, select Hanzi>Pinyin and submit. Done.

It's automated, so you need to look out for errors, but it's generally reliable.

Dear friends,

in this sentence

国家体育场工程设计中进行的性能化消防设计涉及以下几个方面:
  ①± 0.00层环形车道及两侧用房区域防火分区设置及防排烟处理。
  ②3层(餐厅)、4层(包厢)防火分区划分。

what does "①± 0.00层环形车道及两侧用房区域防火分区设置及防排烟处理。"
mean?

①Installation of fire compartments and smoke management for the annular car lane and the two
sides of the used areas on the ± 0.00 floor?

Installation of fire compartments and smoke management for the annular car lane and the two sides

"车道" : Is "carriageway" more appropriate?

"on the ± 0.00 floor" should be used to modify "环形车道",so it's better to put it after
"carriageway".("on the ± 0.00 floor"用来修饰限制“车道”,应该放“车道”后吧)

“两侧用房区域” means "area used for house on the two sides of the carriageway"(or
“areas on the two sides of the carriageway used for house ”,which better?)
"two sides" is two sides of carriageway, not area.

“防排烟处理”:You didn't translate the "防排".
“防”:prevent,防止,避免;“排”:vent,排出。“防排烟处理”means
“防烟排烟处理”actually.("management for preventing and venting smoke"?
不知道翻译的是否准确)

hope help you

Thank you!
You certainly helped me! The only thing that is not clear now is that 用房...
does it mean that the two areas near the carriageway are rooms?

Everything's clear to me except "並". I know of another meaning for this character that wouldn't
make sense. In this sentence, does 並 mean "and then ". Is it a formal way to say 然後?

聽老師念並寫出音節數

並 = 並且,just means "and"
然後 means "then". Both are formal. If you want to use 然後, you can say
先聽老師念,然後寫出音節數。

Does anyone have any experience with this. I am using the palmOS. It seems as is it is not
possible to browse for the files that you want to import but must know the pathway. In addition
the pathway structure in the palm os seems to be beyond me.

Thanks

Breaking out from an earlier thread:
http://www. From Beijing Chinese School/showthread.php?t=18542

Some of us are reading and will be discussing 春风沉醉的晚上 (Spring Night).
http://www.oklink.net/99/1222/yudafu/003.htm

You can read an article about the author here:
http://www.cctv.com/lm/176/71/88858.html
Yu Dafu

As I mentioned in the earlier thread, the style and the psychological details are a bit
reminiscent of F. Scott Fitzgerald and other writers of the early 20th century. One can guess from
Yu's use of English phrases in places, that he probably was very much influenced by English
language literature of that era, though his writing is also very Chinese. The grammar and
vocabulary, particularly, are not completely vernacular Chinese (白话). One might say that it
has 10-20% classical Chinese elements. Some of Lu Xun's stories are similar in this respect.

Very interesting story indeed! I like his writing style. I still need to go through it a second
time, but I found his style of writing very colorful and perfectly descriptive and to me influence
from other languages was not obvious. I'll be looking into some more of his works...

文言訓開班 -

gato, thanks for starting the new thread!

I'm just checking in. I'm three paragraphs into the first chapter. I'm hope my slow reading speed
is not too annoying for the other readers here This Chinese is challenging to me, but should be
manageable.

I like the voice the writer's using so far. The language is indeed descriptive and colorful. Some
of the words trip me up, though. Out of curiosity, he had to 拖几本破书 in the first
paragraph--are 破书 books he'd already read?

同志们加油!

gato -

Quote:

破书 literally means "dilapidated books," but I think here he's using it self-deprecatingly or
self-pityingly to refer to his few possessions. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it so far. I was
very impressed by the story myself.

Muyongshi, I see a European/American influence because of psychological details. I believe that
Chinese authors of earlier generations tend to be less focused on psychology. Many fiction writers
in the 1912-1949 period studied abroad and often were fluent in several foreign languages (e.g.
Japanese, English, French, German). Lu Xun was at least fluent in Japanese and I bet borrowed many
Japanese writing techniques into his writing. We have remember that vernacular Chinese writing
(白话) was still a brand new animal at this time. Everybody was experimenting and naturally
borrowing from foreign vernacular literature that they knew. Classical Chinese writing typically
is very pithy and informs by allusions. They are like those paintings that create images with
absence of brush strokes rather than the presence. You can't just directly translate from
classical Chinese to vernacular Chinese.

muyongshi -

Quote:

I agree with you because within the first few paragraphs he goes to great lengths to describe his
books as pretty much being his only possession. I also think that it refers to the fact that books
are his "life" so to say. He doesn't really have any other possessions but he can't part with his
books.

roddy -

Is there a schedule for reading this over a certain period of time or are we just doing it all at
once?

muyongshi -

I read it in about 20-25 minutes the first time and am going to do a second time and re-lookup
some of the language and that will probably take me about and hour so....

roddy -

I thought it might be an idea to break it into chunks - has four parts anyway - and do them one by
one for the sake of people who will be doing significant amounts of dictionary look up. Not sure
if that's worth doing or not.

文言訓開班 -

I'm a little pressed for time as of right now. Would we be willing to put off finishing this story
until maybe Tuesday?

muyongshi -

Does it matter when who finishes what? We can just talk about it as people feel like talking about
it....it's not like a book club, just like any other thread, anybody can jump in anytime right?

Hello, Thank you so much for your help Skylee, it has been very useful indeed! I went away for the
weekend and asked a couple of young chinese girls how to pronounce some of the names that have
been suggested and names I thought were very beautiful, when spoken in English did not at all
appeal to me being spoken in chinese. I got the pronounciation totally wrong.
I was hoping to find a name that English people won't have a problem with in how to pronounce it
since we are living in Australia and I am originally from Germany. It would be nice to have a name
that also has some sort of significance to my daughters personality but I guess you can't have it
all.
My daughter has lovely green eyes, so Mei Lu, or is it Mei Luo would be quite fitting I think. In
Australia the English male name Milo is not unusual so I would not be too worried that my daughter
would be called Milo.
My first daughters name is Mei Li and I always knew that Mei is beautiful and that Li can be for
Plumblossum but is it right that it is also for Jasmine? This would be rather funny since my
daughters first name is Yasmine.

Sabine, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but given that you are German-Australian, neither
speak, write, understand or can pronounce Chinese, your daughters are not Chinese, and you don't
have any close acquaintances that speak Chinese, why on earth are you so set on giving your
daughters a Chinese name? If you want a name that is meaningful and pronounceable for you and your
family, wouldn't a German name be a better idea?

skylee -

Lu, see post #1 -

Quote:

I have already another girl whose middle name is Mei Li and the surname is Heng. My second
daughters name should also start with Mei as this is a tradition that runs in the family.

As to the "Li" in "Mei Li", if you have not yet chosen the Chinese Character (I mean perhaps some
of the elders in the family might have chosen one), then I suppose you are free to interpret it as
李 (Li3, plum), 梨 (Li2, pear), 莉 (Li4, jasmine), 荔 (Li4, lychee) etc. The numbers denote
the tones if they are pronounced in Mandarin.

Sabine -

Hello, Thank you Skylee! once again. My husbands dad migrated from Singapore to the UK in the 50's
where he married a English lady. He never spoke chinese to the children, therefor my husband does
not speak chinese. My husbands dad died several years ago and there is no chinese family in the Uk
with the Singapore side of the family being rather loosely connected to us. My husband and his
siblings have a chinese middle name in common and depite there being not much heritage to hold on
to he and his siblings decided to keep the custom of a chinese middle name. I respect that custom
even though I am German, but our children are one quarter chinese and therefor I think it is right
to do so. We lived for a few years in HK and Japan, but that was before we had kids.
I very much appreciate all the help, especially from Skylee. would Mei Lu and Mei Luo be the same?
Thank you again!

Sabine -

Hi Skylee, I just managed to find my way through all the links you had so kindly included in your
comments and actually listen to some of the names and of course now I know that Lu and Luo and
very different. I am now deciding between Mei Lu and Mei Tian.

Sabine -

I would like to let you know that we decided on Mei Lu for our daughter. Thank you very much for
all your help with a very special thank you to Skylee. I very much appreciated your help and
without it it would have been so much harder to decide. A BIG thank you!

EDIT: After listening again a few more times, the pronunciation now seems quite clear. So, it's
really my lacking

It was only because of the phrase that I was able to guess what it was. If it'd been a random
idiom or something I'd never heard of, I doubt I'd have had a clue.

I could hear 约 fine, i didn't hear 的人 very well though. Oh well, back to the grind!

lokki -

But, how should the last bit 太浪费 be interpreted ? According to the dictionaries 浪费 =
waste, squander, extravagant, so that would translate something like "she is too extravagant", or
"she wastes/spends too much (money)", but listening to it I get a feeling it could mean something
like "it is such a waste", "it is such a shame" - is this wrong?

Your interpretations are all reasonable, because the speaker didn't seem to be strict enough in
the structure of the sentences. I guess, however, that by saying "she's not a frugal, thrifty
person" the speaker must have then intended to mean, as you put it, "she wastes/spends too much
(money)"

Rich natural gas resources discovered

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-15 17:17:48

Chinanews, Beijing, July 14 - An officer from the Ministry of Land and
Resources said on July 13 that a great discovery had been made in ocean
natural gas prospecting, when a natural gas field was found in the
LW3-1-1 natural gas well with an estimated reserve of more than 100
billion cubic meters, and it might be the biggest natural gas field in
the Chinese sea area.
This discovery also proved that the Zhujiang River Estuary Basin is a
gas-rich section, which will enhance China's confidence in prospecting
for oil and gas in the South China Sea in the future.
China has done much research and prospecting work in this sea area since
the 1990s. The Ministry of Land and Resources has started selecting
strategic oil and natural gas resources blocks, and the Oil and Gas
Prospecting Project in Continental Slopes in the North of South China Sea
has been named among the first batch of the strategic blocks. The project
started in 2004 with the support of national finance.

China needs to strengthen efforts for IPR protection on trade marks

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-03 15:54:16

Chinanews, Guangzhou, July 3 C While some Chinese enterprises are
engaged in producing and selling fake world-brand products for profit,
quite a few foreign companies are also bent on registering famous Chinese
brands. To protect famous Chinese brands effectively, Chinese companies
have to be cautioned about the tricks played by foreign companies.
In a recent seminar on the intellectual property rights (IPR) ownership
and innovation held in Guangdong, participants pointed out that some
foreign companies had deliberately registered famous Chinese trademarks.
Since they play tricks within the law limits of their own country, it is
relatively easier for them to escape punishment.
China is now a leading country in terms of trademark registration. In
2005, some 664,000 trademarks were registered in China, up 12.9% from
last year, and the fourth consecutive year for China to have registered
the most number of trademarks.
In spite of this, we should keep a sober mind about the fact that China
is still not a strong country in this aspect, said Li Yanzhang, deputy
director of the China Trademark Association. At present, few Chinese
brand names are influential in the world.
While the number of famous Chinese brand names is quite limited, many of
them are under constant attacks by foreign companies in trade
registration. The problem lies in the very fact that China has not paid
enough attention to its IPR protection. Among all exported Chinese goods,
only 21% have their trademarks, 29% have no trademarks at all and 50% are
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) goods. Among the 500 most
valuable Chinese brand names published by the World Brand Lab, 46% have
not registered in the United States and 76% not registered in the
European Union.

Minister of Railways travels to Lhasa by experimental train

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 17:30:10

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway will start trial operations on July.1.

Chinanews, June 21 C Recently, Liu Zhijun, Chinese Minister of Railways,
started his Tibetan journey from Beijing. He led officials from the
Ministry of Railways traveling through the newly-built Qinghai-Tibet
Railway in 3 days, examining its preparatory work before its trial run
scheduled on July 1.
Liu pointed out the problems in the course of the ride. When the train
encountered sudden bumping, he suggested it was caused by the technical
problems of the railway, and asked related officials to solve it. He also
required local railway bureaus to recycle the materials of railway
constructions. He pointed out the spare tracks should not be put beside
the railway. He was upset when he saw cows and sheep finding food on the
railway tracks, and thus he required the public security agencies of the
railway and local governments to send necessary security knowledge to
local farmers and herdsmen, helping to make everyone know the meaning of
protecting the railway.
When the experimental train went through the permafrost area, Liu pointed
out to the officials to make regular investigation of the frozen earth,
to guarantee the travel safety of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Liu then talked with Wang Xinwen, head of the Lhasa Railway Station,
through GSM-R communication equipment, the first Chinese railway mobile
communication system to be applied, receiving Wang's report about the
ongoing preparatory work.
When Liu arrived in Lhasa, he immediately convened meetings at which he
studied the preparatory work to the trail run of the Qinghai-Tibet
Railway together with local officials, and expressed his wishes for the
successful trial operation.
